Kigali sits at roughly 1,500 metres above sea level, and that elevation does something notable to the climate: it strips out the equatorial extremes you might expect this close to the equator and replaces them with what locals sometimes call eternal spring. Temperatures barely shift across the calendar year. Highs hover between 26°C (79°F) and 28°C (82°F). Lows rarely dip below 15°C (59°F). Humidity stays steady at around 70%, never tipping into the suffocating weight of lowland tropical cities. What varies is rain. Rain is the real organising principle of the year here. Rwanda follows two wet seasons and two dry seasons, though the edges blur. The long dry season runs from June through August. July averages barely 10mm (0.4 inches) of rain. Days are reliably clear and sunny. The long rains arrive in March and peak through April. Kigali receives its heaviest monthly totals then. Around 130mm (5.1 inches) falls in March. April delivers 135mm (5.3 inches). These arrive typically as afternoon thunderstorms that clear by evening. A shorter rainy spell returns in October and November. A brief transitional stretch bridges December into February. The short dry and short wet seasons are, in practice, more moderate versions of their longer counterparts. What makes Kigali's climate pleasant for most visitors is the consistency of those cool nights. Even at the height of the dry season, when afternoon sun warms the terraced hills, you will want a light layer after dark. Mornings here feel crisp and clear. They surprise people expecting equatorial heat. The altitude keeps the city noticeably cooler than East African coastal towns at any comparable time of year.

Best Time to Visit

Recommended timing for different travel styles.

Cultural
June through September is the clear window. The long dry season keeps Kigali's roads navigable. Outdoor markets and hillside neighbourhoods stay accessible. The light quality on the city's terraced slopes is good for photography. The Kigali Genocide Memorial draws reflective visitors year-round. Dry-season conditions make it easier to move between sites. Afternoon rain won't cut plans short.
Adventure
For adventure and hiking, gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park which most Kigali visitors pair with time in the city, the dry seasons offer cleaner forest trails. June to September works. The transitional December to February stretch does too. Both bring less muddy approaches to the volcanic slopes. Some guides note that the short rains of October and November make the vegetation more lush. The scenery becomes arguably more dramatic. It is worth weighing both.
Relaxation
For relaxation and lake travel, if combining Kigali with Lake Kivu, the long dry season again wins. Overland routes are smoother. The lake is calmer. There is less chance of a sustained afternoon downpour interrupting a lakeside afternoon.
Budget
For budget travel, the wet seasons tend to see lower international visitor demand. November and the March to April peak rains are prime examples. This can work in a traveller's favour on accommodation. The trade-off is logistical friction. Unpaved roads outside the city can slow things considerably. Afternoon plans occasionally need rearranging around rain.

What to Pack

Essentials and seasonal recommendations for Kigali.

Year-Round Essentials
light fleece or mid-weight cardigan
That 15°C to 16°C (59°F to 61°F) overnight temperature surprises visitors expecting equatorial heat. Pack a light fleece or mid-weight cardigan. You will reach for it most evenings regardless of season. Nights here stay cool.
compact, packable rain jacket or poncho
Even in the dry season an occasional shower appears. During the rainy seasons you will use it daily. Keep the rain jacket handy.
SPF 30 or higher sunscreen
Rwanda's sun is strong at altitude despite the relatively mild temperatures.
brimmed hat
Rwanda's sun is strong at altitude despite the relatively mild temperatures.
insect repellent
if you are venturing beyond the city to parks or lakesides.
reusable water bottle
Fits Kigali's environmental culture well. It reduces plastic waste in a country that takes that seriously. Bring a reusable bottle.
dry seasons (June through September and transitional December to February)
Clothing
light breathable trousers, short-sleeved shirts
Footwear
comfortable walking shoes or trainers
Accessories
fleece or cardigan for evenings and early mornings
Layering Tip
If you are combining the city with gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park, add long-sleeved shirts. Bring sturdy gardening-style gloves. The vegetation is dense. At higher altitude it can feel cool.
rainy seasons (March to May and October to November)
Clothing
Avoid light-coloured clothing for days involving outdoor walking. Rwanda's red volcanic clay is persistent. It does not come out easily.
Footwear
waterproof shoes or at least quick-drying footwear
Accessories
rain jacket
Plug Type
Type C (two round pins) and Type J (three round pins)
Voltage
230V
Adapter Note
Most modern chargers and laptops are dual-voltage. You will typically need only a plug adapter rather than a voltage converter. Check your devices before packing one.
