Kigali, the capital of Rwanda, welcomes international travelers through Kigali International Airport (KGL), the country's main gateway. Upon arrival at Kigali International Airport, travelers will proceed through immigration control where their travel documents will be verified. The airport is clean, well-organized, and equipped with modern amenities. Rwanda has digitized much of its immigration system, allowing many travelers to complete visa applications online before arrival, which significantly speeds up the entry process. The country's commitment to ease of travel has made Kigali an increasingly popular hub for business and tourism in East Africa. Before traveling to Kigali, ensure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your intended stay, have proof of accommodation, and be prepared to show evidence of sufficient funds for your visit. Rwanda is known for its cleanliness and strict environmental policies, including a ban on plastic bags. Rwanda offers one of the most welcoming visa policies in Africa. All nationalities can obtain a visa, either on arrival, online before travel, or are granted visa-free entry. The country has eliminated visa requirements for citizens of all African Union member states and the Commonwealth.

Visa-Free Entry

Passport must be valid for at least 6 months from date of entry. Visitors may still need to complete an online registration or obtain an entry stamp on arrival. Always carry proof of accommodation and return/onward ticket.

How to Apply: Visa can be obtained at the airport immigration counter. However, it is strongly recommended to apply online in advance to avoid queues. Processing on arrival typically takes 15-30 minutes during busy periods.
Cost: Single entry (30 days): $50 USD. Multiple entry (90 days): $70 USD. East Africa Tourist Visa (Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda): $100 USD for 90 days.

Payment can be made by cash (USD) or credit/debit card. Online pre-application is highly recommended through the official Rwanda immigration portal.

Electronic Visa (eVisa)

30 days (single entry) or 90 days (multiple entry)

All travelers can apply for a visa online before travel, which is the recommended method for faster processing

How to Apply: Apply online at www.migration.gov.rw at least 3 working days before travel. The system is user-friendly and requires uploading a passport photo and passport bio page. Approval typically takes 24-72 hours. Print the approval letter and present it upon arrival along with your passport.
Cost: Single entry (30 days): $50 USD. Multiple entry (90 days): $70 USD. Payment online via credit/debit card.

This is the most convenient option for all travelers, including those eligible for visa on arrival. The eVisa significantly speeds up the immigration process at the airport.

East Africa Tourist Visa

90 days, multiple entries across all three countries

Special visa allowing travel between Rwanda, Kenya, and Uganda

How to Apply: Apply online through any of the three countries' immigration websites or obtain on arrival at the first port of entry in the region.
Cost: $100 USD

Valid only for tourism purposes. Must enter through one of the three participating countries and can freely move between them during the validity period.

Arrival Process

The entry process at Kigali International Airport is modern, efficient, and typically straightforward. The airport handles the majority of international arrivals and is well-equipped with clear signage in English and French. Immigration officers are generally professional and courteous.

Arrival and Disembarkation

After landing, follow signs to immigration. If you haven't obtained a visa online, look for visa application counters before the main immigration area. The walk from the aircraft to immigration typically takes 5-10 minutes.

Health Screening

Depending on current health protocols, you may undergo temperature screening or health questionnaire checks. Yellow fever vaccination certificates may be checked if arriving from or transiting through endemic countries.

Visa Processing (if applicable)

If you haven't obtained an eVisa, proceed to the visa-on-arrival counter. Complete the application form, provide required documents, and make payment. This process can take 15-45 minutes depending on queue length.

Immigration Control

Present your passport, visa (if applicable), completed arrival card, and supporting documents to the immigration officer. Your biometric data (photo and fingerprints) will be captured. The officer will verify your documents and may ask questions about your visit.

Baggage Claim

After clearing immigration, proceed to baggage claim. Kigali airport is relatively small, so baggage typically arrives quickly. Trolleys are available.

Customs Declaration

Before exiting, you'll pass through customs. If you have items to declare, use the red channel. Otherwise, proceed through the green channel. Random inspections may occur. Note that plastic bags are prohibited in Rwanda and will be confiscated.

Airport Exit

After clearing customs, you'll enter the arrivals hall where you can access currency exchange, SIM card vendors, taxi services, and car rentals. Official taxi services are available with fixed rates to the city center.

Documents to Have Ready

Valid Passport

Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended stay and have at least 2 blank pages for stamps. This is strictly enforced.

Visa or Visa Approval Letter

Either proof of visa-free eligibility, printed eVisa approval, or funds to purchase visa on arrival ($50-100 USD).

Return or Onward Ticket

Proof of departure from Rwanda. This may be checked by immigration officers, especially for longer stays. Electronic copies are acceptable.

Proof of Accommodation

Hotel reservation, invitation letter from host, or address where you'll be staying. Immigration may ask for this information.

Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate

Required if arriving from or having transited through a yellow fever endemic country within the previous 6 days. The certificate must be at least 10 days old.

Proof of Sufficient Funds

While rarely requested, have evidence of financial means for your stay (bank statements, credit cards, cash). Approximately $50-100 per day is considered reasonable.

Travel Insurance

Not mandatory but highly recommended. Some visa applications may request proof of travel insurance coverage.

Tips for Smooth Entry

Apply for your eVisa at least 3-5 days before travel to avoid any last-minute issues and ensure faster processing at the airport.

Have all documents organized and easily accessible in a travel folder. Print physical copies of your visa approval, hotel reservations, and return ticket as internet access may be limited.

Remove all plastic bags from your luggage before arrival. Rwanda has a strict ban on plastic bags, and they will be confiscated at customs. Use paper or cloth bags instead.

Carry some US dollars in cash for visa fees if needed. Notes should be recent (2013 or newer) and in good condition. Damaged or old bills may be rejected.

Download and complete the arrival card online before your flight if possible, or fill it out completely on the plane to save time at immigration.

Be patient and polite with immigration officers. Answer questions clearly and honestly. The process is generally smooth but can take time during peak arrival periods.

Exchange a small amount of currency at the airport if needed, but rates are better in the city. ATMs are available in the arrivals hall for withdrawing Rwandan Francs.

Keep your passport and visa documents secure throughout your stay. You may need to show them at hotels and when traveling around the country.

Save important contact numbers in your phone before arrival, including your embassy and accommodation contacts.

If you're eligible for visa-free entry, confirm your nationality's status on the official Rwanda immigration website before travel, as policies are periodically updated.

Customs & Duty-Free

Rwanda Customs operates at all ports of entry with a focus on preventing prohibited items, particularly plastic bags, from entering the country. The customs process is generally efficient, though inspections can be thorough. Rwanda has strict environmental and security regulations that all travelers must respect.

Alcohol

1 liter of spirits or wine

Only for persons 18 years and older. Excessive quantities may be subject to duty or confiscation.

Tobacco

250 grams of tobacco products (approximately 200 cigarettes or 50 cigars)

Only for persons 18 years and older. Must be for personal use only.

Perfume

Reasonable quantity for personal use (typically up to 50ml of perfume and 250ml of eau de toilette)

Commercial quantities require declaration and may incur duty.

Currency

No limit on foreign currency, but amounts exceeding $10,000 USD (or equivalent) must be declared

Declaration is required on both entry and exit. Failure to declare may result in confiscation and penalties. Keep declaration forms for your departure.

Gifts/Goods

Personal effects and gifts up to a value of $500 USD

Items must be for personal use and not for commercial purposes. New items in original packaging may be questioned. Electronics and valuable items should be declared.

Plastic bags (single-use carrier bags) - Rwanda has a complete ban on plastic bags. Use paper, cloth, or biodegradable alternatives
Narcotics and illegal drugs - Severe penalties including lengthy imprisonment apply
Firearms and ammunition - Without proper permits and authorization from Rwandan authorities
Pornographic materials - Including magazines, videos, and digital content
Counterfeit goods - Fake designer items, pirated software, and counterfeit currency
Endangered species products - Ivory, certain animal skins, and products derived from protected species
Hazardous materials - Explosives, flammable substances, and toxic chemicals without proper authorization
Items that threaten national security - Surveillance equipment, military gear without authorization

Restricted Items

Prescription medications - Bring only what you need with original prescriptions and doctor's letters. Quantities exceeding 3 months supply require special permits
Drones and aerial photography equipment - Require special permits from Rwanda Civil Aviation Authority and may need security clearance
Professional camera and video equipment - May require media accreditation or permits, especially for commercial use
Plants and plant products - Require phytosanitary certificates and import permits from Rwanda Agriculture Board
Animals and animal products - Require veterinary certificates, import permits, and quarantine may apply
Satellite phones and certain communication equipment - May require special authorization from regulatory authorities
Cultural artifacts and antiques - Export of Rwandan cultural property is restricted and requires permits

Health Requirements

Rwanda has specific health entry requirements designed to protect public health. Travelers should ensure they meet vaccination requirements and are aware of health recommendations before travel.

Required Vaccinations

Yellow Fever - Required if arriving from or having transited through a yellow fever endemic country. The vaccination certificate must be dated at least 10 days before arrival and is valid for life. Endemic countries include most of sub-Saharan Africa and parts of South America. Keep your certificate with your passport as it will be checked.

Recommended Vaccinations

Hepatitis A - Recommended for all travelers due to food and water-borne risks
Typhoid - Recommended, especially if visiting smaller cities, rural areas, or staying with friends/relatives
Hepatitis B - Recommended for travelers who may have medical procedures, get tattoos, or have intimate contact
Rabies - Consider for travelers with extensive outdoor exposure or those working with animals
Meningitis - May be recommended during outbreak periods
Routine vaccinations - Ensure you're up to date with MMR, DTP, polio, and seasonal influenza
Malaria prophylaxis - While not a vaccination, antimalarial medication is strongly recommended. Kigali has relatively low malaria risk due to high altitude, but prophylaxis is advised

Health Insurance

Travel health insurance is not mandatory for entry but is highly recommended. Rwanda has good medical facilities in Kigali, but medical care can be expensive for foreigners. Ensure your insurance covers medical evacuation, as specialized treatment may require transfer to Kenya or South Africa. Some visa applications may request proof of insurance coverage. Keep insurance documents accessible and know your policy's emergency contact numbers.

Traveling with Children

Children must have their own passport (valid for 6 months). If traveling with one parent or without parents, carry a notarized letter of consent from the non-traveling parent(s) authorizing the trip, including contact details and copies of their ID/passport. This is strictly enforced to prevent child trafficking. Unaccompanied minors require special arrangements with airlines and immigration. Birth certificates should be carried to prove relationship. Children are subject to the same visa requirements as adults but may receive fee waivers in some cases.

Traveling with Pets

Pets (dogs and cats) can be imported with proper documentation. Required: Valid rabies vaccination certificate (at least 30 days old but not more than 12 months), veterinary health certificate issued within 10 days of travel, import permit from Rwanda Agriculture Board (RAB), and microchip identification. Pets must enter through Kigali International Airport. Quarantine may be required if documentation is incomplete. Contact RAB at least 30 days before travel: info@rab.gov.rw. Airlines have specific requirements for pet travel - confirm with your carrier. Consider the stress on animals and Kigali's climate before bringing pets.

Extended Stays

Tourist visas can be extended at the Directorate General of Immigration and Emigration office in Kigali (located in Kimihurura). Apply before your current visa expires - overstaying results in fines of $100 per day. Extensions are granted in 30-day increments up to 90 days total. Required documents: passport, current visa, proof of accommodation, proof of funds, and application fee ($50-70). For stays beyond 90 days, you'll need to apply for a long-term visa or residence permit, which requires additional documentation including police clearance, medical examination, and proof of purpose (employment, study, business, or family reunion). Processing takes 2-4 weeks.

Business Travelers

Business visitors can enter on tourist visas for short business activities (meetings, conferences, negotiations). For extended business activities or employment, a business visa or work permit is required. Documentation needed: invitation letter from Rwandan company, business registration documents, and proof of business activities. Work permits are processed by the Directorate General of Immigration and require employer sponsorship, educational certificates, professional qualifications, and medical examination. Processing takes 4-6 weeks. Business travelers should carry business cards, company letters, and meeting confirmations.

Students

Students require a student visa for studies in Rwanda. Apply through the immigration website with: acceptance letter from recognized Rwandan institution, proof of paid tuition, proof of accommodation, police clearance certificate, medical examination results, and passport photos. Student visas are initially issued for one year and renewable annually. Part-time work restrictions apply. International students must register with their institution and immigration within 7 days of arrival.

Transit Passengers

Passengers transiting through Kigali International Airport without leaving the airport do not need a visa if staying airside and continuing within 24 hours. If you wish to leave the airport or stay longer, you'll need to obtain a visa. Rwanda offers free 24-hour transit visas for eligible passengers who wish to explore Kigali between flights - inquire at immigration. Ensure you have confirmed onward tickets and valid visa for your final destination.

Journalists and Media

Professional journalists and media crews require media accreditation from Rwanda Media Commission before arrival. Contact: info@rmc.gov.rw. Requirements include: letter from media organization, assignment details, equipment list, and valid press credentials. Tourist visas are not valid for professional journalism. Unauthorized journalism activities can result in deportation and equipment confiscation. Photography restrictions apply to government buildings, military installations, and airports - always ask permission.

Medical Tourism

Rwanda is developing medical tourism, particularly for specialized treatments. Medical tourists enter on tourist visas but should carry: medical appointment confirmations, doctor's referral letters, medical records, and proof of payment or insurance coverage.
